Risk Assessment - The Key to Successful Engagements – Lecture
Financial statement users, regulators, & others expect auditors to detect material misstatements due to fraud. In many cases, clients also expect their auditors to detect fraud. Despite the fact that most changes to auditing standards issued in more than the last two decades were designed to improve the auditor's ability to do so, the profession still does not meet the expectations of others.

In addition, business managers & executives, often enlisting the aid of CFEs & CPAs, are expected to prevent fraud, when possible, & to detect instances of fraud that are not prevented. While it is not possible to prevent or detect all fraudulent activities, it is generally believed that enough is not being done to control the situation. In many cases, the weakest component of the processes & techniques used is the performance of a meaningful risk assessment.

An effective & robust risk assessment process allows those individuals to direct their attention to the aspects of an entity that are most susceptible to fraud & avoid wasting time & resources on segments that create less risk. Many attend fraud seminars & read manuals providing suggestions & tools for preventing & detecting fraud, but few, if any, provide an efficient & effective means of performing an effective risk assessment.

This brief program will review some of the basic aspects of fraud that should be considered, including the nature of fraud & how to use that information to remind attendees how fraud is committed & how to develop a process for prevention. We will also review the characteristics of fraud to identify the conditions necessary for a fraud scheme to be successful & a “big picture” approach to prevention. The five components of internal control will also be reviewed to enhance the understanding of the role each plays in the prevention & detection of fraud.

The process begins with an understanding of existing controls & a means of identifying weaknesses, allowing individuals to determine which areas are most in need of attention.

In this session, processes will be introduced that will systematize the risk assessment process & make the analysis very straightforward. Tools that enable & enhance the analysis will be provided that can be used to:

  • Identify control deficiencies
  • Determine areas to focus attention upon
  • Establish priorities for adding or enhancing controls
  • Develop audit programs for use by internal & external auditors in determining whether, & to what degree, controls can be relied upon

Attendees can expect to:

  • Recall the nature & characteristics of fraud & the five components of internal control
  • Identify effective approaches for documenting existing internal controls
  • Learn techniques for identifying internal control deficiencies
  • Establish approaches for using identified deficiencies to enhance or augment controls
  • Create internal & external audit programs to improve the efficiency & effectiveness of audit engagements

Major topics include:

  • The nature & characteristics of fraud
  • The COSO internal control model
  • Understanding & documenting existing internal controls
  • Using the understanding to assess risks
  • Developing priorities for enhancing & augmenting internal controls based on the risk assessment
  • Creating audit programs for internal & external auditors that are focused on the detection of fraud

Disconnect to Connect: Practicing Mindfulness in the Workplace – Lecture
Do you find yourself distracted at work and at home? Do you fear that you are not working to your full potential with your team or as a leader because of workplace misunderstandings? Are you empathetic as a leader and seek to understand others’ perspectives? In this session, we will take a deep dive into understanding where we are off balance in our lives -- both at work and at home -- and how this affects the experience we create with others.

Many of us can feel that we are technically up to speed in what we do; however, we are not living up to our full potential as a leader or co-worker because we lack the skills to mindfully connect with one another. Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the current moment and learning how to calmly observe our thoughts and feelings without judgment or action. By learning to disconnect, we can connect in a more intentional, positive way and find common ground with those we work with and care about. Through the daily practice of mindfulness, we can gain a better understanding of where we are off-balance internally so that we can show up better for those around us, be a more successful leader and feel more engaged as an employee.

In this session, you will:

  • Gain a clear understanding of what mindfulness is and how to practice it;
  • Learn to evaluate your work-life balance and the work-life balance of your employees;
  • Understand how to improve employee engagement and well being;
  • Discover a couple of quick and easy meditation practices for mindfulness in the office; and,

Tax Method Change Identification – the Next CPA Practice Niche? – Lecture
CPA firms have evolved from just doing tax returns and financial statements to adding niche practices. Those niches have included business valuation, consulting, SALT, industry specialization, to foreign taxation expertise. One that I have found missing is a niche in tax method changes.

Typically, we CPAs prepare the current year return in the same manner as the prior year return was prepared without asking the crucial questions as to:

  • Whether the prior year return was prepared correctly,
  • Is there a new tax law or issue to address in this tax year that was not applicable in the prior year return preparation?
  • Is the taxpayer employing improper tax methods, and/or
  • Is the taxpayer able to employ different method(s) of accounting that would result in significant current tax deductions or consistent taxable income deferrals.

This session will focus on:

  • Understanding the reasons behind a need for focused annual tax review,
  • The definition of the proper preparation of a tax return,
  • Why key tax issues are missed in the preparation of a tax return,
  • Examples of missed issues in tax return reviews,
  • How to find missed tax issues in a return preparation,
  • The role of tax method changes in a return review,
  • Most common potential tax method change issues, and
  • Why a CPA firm should be motivated to get improper and potential method changes right.
