How to start an LLC in Pennsylvania
Starting a new business comes with a variety of challenges. The following highlights some of the critical steps needed to keep your business compliant if you decide to form a Pennsylvania LLC.
Step 1: Decide on a name for your PA LLC
Naming your business is an important step that requires careful consideration. There are many business and compliance requirements to weigh when making the final decision. Pennsylvania has specific rules on what name you can use for your LLC
- Required words. In Pennsylvania, the LLC name must contain the term “Company”, “Limited”, or "Limited Liability Company", or it can use an abbreviation (ex. "Ltd.", "Co.", "LLC", "L.L.C."). The name may be in any language but must be expressed in Roman (English) letters or characters or Arabic or Roman numerals.
- Unique. Generally, the name of a Pennsylvania LLC cannot be the same as the name of another entity on file with the Pennsylvania Department of State.
- Prohibited or restricted words. Use of words such as (but not limited to) "Bank", "Bond", "Endowment", "Insurance", "Survey", "Title", and "Trust" require approval by the appropriate state department or agency. The name also cannot be misleading.
