Naming your DC LLC

Your LLC’s name must contain one of the following: “Limited Liability Company,” “LLC” or “L.L.C.”

Member/Manager information

Washington, DC has the following requirements for the members and managers of LLCs:

  • Minimum number. Each LLC must have at least one member.
  • Residence requirements. DC does not have a residence requirement for members/managers of LLC.
  • Age requirements. DC does not have age requirements for members or managers.
  • Inclusion in the Articles of Organization. The name(s) and address(es) of the LLC’s organizer(s) must be listed in the Articles of Organization, but the names of the members or managers do not need to be.

Requirements for the Articles of Organization

You form an LLC in DC by filing Articles of Organization and paying the state-imposed filing fee.

Registered agent

You must have a District of Columbia registered agent if you form an LLC in Washington, DC. The registered agent must have a physical address in the District of Columbia—no post office boxes are allowed. And, your agent must be available during normal business hours to accept important legal and tax documents for the business.

Professional services businesses

DC allows professionals, such as accountants, attorneys, and physicians, to form a professional limited liability company (PLLC). A PLLC must have those initials as part of its name.
