Reaching the right answer isn’t enough — audit teams must verify, document, and defend the research behind every judgment
Audit judgments don’t fail because teams can’t find information. More often, they fail because no one can clearly demonstrate why a particular conclusion was the right one at the time it was made.
As audit work becomes more complex and time-compressed, firms have learned that verification matters as much as accuracy. It isn’t enough to reach the right answer; teams need to show that the research behind an audit judgment is reliable, current, and defensible.
Accurate research isn’t automatically audit-ready
In practice, research can look solid and still fall apart under review. Sources may be outdated. Assumptions may be implicit rather than documented. Conclusions may rely on summaries without a clear link to primary authoritative sources.
Looking back on inspection findings and internal reviews, many firms found the same pattern: the research existed, but the verification steps were inconsistent or invisible.
