Making the switch: How two firms are building smarter workflows with CCH Axcess™

When it comes to evaluating new technology, hearing directly from firms that have made the switch can be more valuable than any product brochure. In a recent webinar, we spoke with Christopher Ernest of Pozerski Hatch & Co. and Denice Pavey of Sonder CPA about their experiences moving to CCH Axcess, and how that decision is helping them address some of the most pressing challenges facing accounting firms today.

Integration: Connecting systems to save time

Both firms were looking for a more cohesive, cloud-based solution that could support hybrid work and reduce reliance on in-house servers. For Chris Ernest, the decision came down to efficiency and risk reduction. “We really wanted to make a sincere commitment to the cloud and get the servers, and the risks around them, out of our office,” he said.

Denice Pavey shared a similar motivation. Her firm had been using a mix of tools and wanted a more unified platform. “That common database was a big selling point for our firm,” she said. “We saw how innovative CCH was and how aligned they were with where we wanted to go.”

The integration across the CCH Axcess suite has helped both firms streamline their tax workflows. Chris described how his team uses Document, Scan, Autoflow, and Workflow to automate return preparation. “It dramatically cuts down on prep time,” he said. “We’ve been able to take on additional work because of the efficiencies.”

Denice pointed to Workflow as a standout tool. “In addition to the workflow tracking, we’re able to use it for communication, reminders, and client notes... It’s become our starting point for every return.”

Trust: Supporting staff and scaling with confidence

Staffing remains a top concern for many firms, and both speakers emphasized the importance of tools that support, not replace, their teams.

“We’re using Workflow dashboards to visualize workloads and shift tasks as needed,” Denice explained. “…It gives us a quick snapshot of what’s going on and it’s quicker than trying to run reports because it’s instant.”

Chris added that automation has allowed his team to work more efficiently without burning out. “Our staff like when we Autoflow returns because it gives them a chance to become more of a reviewer than a preparer... It gives them some variety and that works out really well for us.”

Chris’s firm is also exploring outsourcing options like Xpitax to extend their capacity during peak times.

Innovation: Solving real problems with practical tools

Innovation isn’t just about new features, it’s about solving real problems. That’s why CCH Axcess Scan Optimizer, a new AI-powered tool for handling K-1s, has generated so much interest. “This is a breakthrough,” said Lisa Erickson, Associate Director of Product Management. “It’s not just another document tool. GenAI understands tax documents and extracts data with unprecedented accuracy.”

Denice’s firm is also participating in the preview program for CCH Axcess Intelligence, a new solution designed to surface insights and support advisory services. “The fact that they're asking for feedback to make the products more user friendly, I think is fabulous...” she said. “It's important to do those sort of things just so our voices are heard.”

See what’s working and what’s next

The conversation with Chris and Denice offered a practical look at how firms are using integrated technology to work smarter. Their experiences show that with the right tools, it’s possible to reduce manual work, support staff development, and stay ahead of change.

As firms continue to navigate growth, staffing pressures, and evolving client expectations, these stories serve as a reminder that meaningful transformation is already underway, and it’s being led by firms willing to take the next step.
