What happens when clinicians no longer need to search for answers?

Key Takeaways

  • Clinical decision support has evolved from search-driven interactions to workflow-integrated intelligence.
  • Trusted evidence and AI can help clinicians make informed decisions without disrupting care delivery.
  • Expanding technology partnerships are increasing the reach of clinical expertise across the healthcare ecosystem.
AI-enabled workflow integration can deliver trusted clinical intelligence within the flow of care, expanding evidence-based guidance to even before the clinician thinks to stop and ask.

For decades, clinical decision support has largely depended on clinicians initiating the interaction.

Evidence-based guidance could help shape decisions, but only when clinicians had the time and reason to stop and look for it. Even then, the information wasn’t always available alongside the patient-specific context needed to make it immediately actionable.

Today, we have an opportunity to improve patient outcomes by combining patient-specific context with evidence-based recommendations and delivering both directly within clinical workflows.

That is why we’re bringing UpToDate deeper into the workflow alongside our growing number of strategic technology partners and AI capabilities.

Instead of being one step removed from care, clinical evidence can increasingly be available alongside the patient, the condition, the history, and the decision at hand.

At this year’s HLTH conference, we’re excited to showcase how we can use that opportunity to improve care delivery.

Improving patient-specific outcomes through workflow integration

Importantly, with AI tools, clinicians remain firmly in the driver’s seat. Our role is to empower them to make informed decisions with greater confidence and efficiency.

Traditionally, UpToDate answered clinical questions when a clinician decided to ask one. It was fundamentally a pull model.

Partnerships are enabling something different. As UpToDate becomes integrated into ambient platforms, EHRs, and AI assistants, evidence-based guidance can increasingly be surfaced in near real time and informed by the patient information already available within those workflows.

Now, clinical expertise can be part of every encounter, not just those in which a question is explicitly asked. That creates the opportunity for broader impact, greater consistency across care teams, and measurable improvements in care delivery at scale.

How UpToDate is expanding the reach of clinical intelligence through partnerships

UpToDate is partnering with major players in clinical workflows, from ambient partners such as Abridge, Microsoft Dragon Copilot, Suki, and Doximity to EMR partners such as Epic®, Athena, and Oracle.

These partnerships allow UpToDate to participate directly in the workflows where care decisions are being made. In ambient documentation workflows, EHR experiences, and AI-assisted interactions, clinical guidance can be surfaced alongside relevant patient information, rather than requiring clinicians to leave the workflow to search separately.

We’re also extending UpToDate into AI-native experiences, including enterprise deployments of ChatGPT, with work underway across other leading AI platforms.

At the same time, we’re exploring ways to embed pathway-based decision support more deeply into workflows, connecting evidence, local protocols, and care improvement initiatives more directly to patient care.

The objective is consistent across all integrations: make evidence-based expertise and relevant context available within the workflow where decisions are made, so clinicians can spend more time focused on patient care instead of pausing to search for answers.

Driving improved care at greater scale

Everything we do is oriented toward serving clinicians at the point of care to drive better patient outcomes.

We see the future of clinical decision support as extending the reach of clinical expertise to support more decisions, across more workflows, and in more patient encounters.

Historically, we influenced care when a clinician thought to ask a question. Through workflow integration and strategic partnerships, we can now bring trusted clinical intelligence into many more encounters. That’s a much larger surface area for clinical decision support and a much greater opportunity to improve patient-specific outcomes.
