5 signs that show you are out of control of your risks

Are you in control of risks in your organization?

In this blog post you will find five indicators that show action is required to keep your business and its people safe.

1 – Rise in incidents over time – not just accidents, but also near-misses and minor incidents

An increasing amount of incidents is one of the clearest signs of being out of control of your risks. They can be small incidents, or near-misses even, or larger incidents like the recent Suez canal incident.

2 – Running behind on housekeeping can be an indicator, consider the left situation vs the right situation

‘Rule of 3’ is a correlational theory that says: if there are 3 substandard conditions, it is an indication that an incident is not far away. Unfortunately, the reverse is not true; NOT having any substandard condition does not mean you won’t have any incidents.

3 – High turnover can indicate a lot of new inexperienced personnel – knowledge in the company vs knowledge in the people

A high turnover means more new people on the job. If your company does not have good management systems in place to ensure knowledge stays in the company, rather than in the people, an incident might be just around the corner.

4 – Maintenance OFFLINE – know the impact of putting a system offline

How do you know whether you can take that 5th part out for maintenance? Do you understand the chain of barriers or controls that decision can affect and possibly degrade?

5 – Rise in incidents over time – AGAIN? Yes, recurring incidents show a lack of learning from incidents

Learning from incidents is one of the hardest challenges companies face these days. With the number of deadly work-related incidents at an all-time low, paradoxically we have less and less information to learn from. How does your company learn from the ‘free learning opportunities’, also known as near-misses?
