Innovating clinical decision support: Highlights from Frost Radar 2025

UpToDate has been recognized as a leader in clinical decision support innovation from Frost & Sullivan in their annual Frost Radar report. Learn how we’re partnering with leaders to usher in the future of healthcare.

Clinical decision support (CDS) is integral to modern, high-performing healthcare systems—but not all solutions are created equal. The newly released 2025 Frost Radar™ Clinical Decision Support System Report highlights the growing impact of innovation in this field, providing healthcare leaders with data to make critical choices for their organizations. After analyzing over 60 CDS solutions, UpToDate® from Wolters Kluwer was recognized as the clear leader in innovation, demonstrating a commitment to aligning with the needs of today’s clinical, IT, and administrative decision-makers.

A focus on strategy and innovation

The Frost Radar report highlights that in 2025, CDS solutions have to deliver enterprise value that meets strategic drivers alongside a mandate for innovation:

  • Strategic drivers: Transition to value-based care, personalized medicine, and the rapid adoption of cloud and AI technologies are redefining how CDS tools are developed, scaled, and deployed.
  • Innovation mandate: Vendors are expected to go beyond traditional, evidence-based outputs and now focus on capabilities such as generative AI, workflow automation, interoperability, and user-focused design.
Wolters Kluwer owns the innovation section due to its speed of technology integration, long-term vision alignment, and current market share owing to brand stickiness.

Unifying decision support for increasingly complex care

Healthcare leaders face multiple headwinds, from data overload to financial challenges to navigating operational and care workflows. Despite the challenges, the patient experience and outcomes must remain the focus of an organization's technology strategy. The era is calling for solutions that can help streamline decision-making, improve workflows, and adapt to new care models.

A unified, evidence-based platform across systems can support shared business and care decisions. Frost & Sullivan noted that with the launch of UpToDate Enterprise Edition in early 2024, care teams, buyers, and administrators can now all be on the same platform to enhance care delivery and improve ROI. It’s also providing analytics to derive system-level insights on product usage, community trends, and education needs.

Workflow integrations are also essential for modern health systems to support clinicians with their daily tasks and care interactions, and to also address current patient expectations of being an active part of the care team. A string of partnerships were recently announced, including with Microsoft and AI-powered solutions, and Epic customers can now integrate an expanded library of patient education leaflets aligned with the clinical information referenced by care teams. This move highlights the UpToDate commitment to equipping more members of the team—and the healthcare system at large—with the evidence-based information needed to make informed decisions. The report notes that the ability to scale technology across teams is a key to growth, especially into administrative and financial workflows where evidence can help inform broader system decisions.

A collaborative approach to AI innovations

Healthcare and life sciences are adopting AI at a faster rate than other industries. A recent American Medical Association survey noted 66% of physicians are using some type of augmented intelligence for certain tasks—a doubling from the previous year. Over half of the physicians surveyed said reducing administrative burdens through AI automation was the biggest area of opportunity, and nearly half said human feedback loops were critical to build trust and adoption.

Collaborating with practicing clinicians and health systems has been central to the UpToDate approach to AI in decision support. With the creation of AI Labs, health leaders and developers can test generative AI in real-world clinical settings before deployment and receive key feedback from users. This was reflected in the first release of the AI-enhanced search feature which—to avoid hallucinations with generative text—focuses on surfacing verbatim answers and sources to answer clinical questions.

We are committed to our mission of helping healthcare professionals around the world to make informed and impactful decisions, backed by a foundation of cutting-edge technology and expert-driven solutions.
