Wolters Kluwer study: AI has become part of everyday school management in Germany

Artificial intelligence has become part of everyday work for many school leaders in Germany. The new “Zukunftsstudie Schulmanagement 2026” (Future Study on School Management 2026) by Wolters Kluwer Legal & Regulatory Germany shows that while AI adoption is already widespread, shared strategies and reliable frameworks are often still lacking.

91% of the school leaders surveyed already use AI in their management work, with 62% using it daily or regularly. AI is primarily used for text-related tasks, research and information processing, as well as for generating and structuring ideas.

However, widespread adoption also comes with challenges. Only 6% of respondents report having a clear strategy for the use of AI. Data protection and liability issues, uncertainty about legal requirements and a lack of time to build expertise are among the main barriers. Accordingly, school leaders see a strong need for tailored training, practical examples and reliable legal guidance.

A total of 577 people participated in the fifth edition of the study, including 389 school leaders and 79 representatives of school authorities.
