The world observes International Day Against Childhood Cancer on February 15, a day that follows World Cancer Day, drawing attention to the ongoing fight against childhood cancer. According to the World Health Organization, cancer remains a leading cause of death among children and adolescents worldwide, with approximately 400,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Wolters Kluwer is also marking this special day and its partnership with the Princes Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology.
The Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology is one of the world’s leading pediatric oncology centers. Located in Utrecht, the Netherlands, the center is dedicated to its mission of curing every child with cancer with an optimal quality of life. Nearly 1,000 healthcare professionals and 400 researchers work every day towards this goal. The Máxima collaborates internationally with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the Hopp-Kindertumorzentrum Heidelberg.
The center's commitment is complemented by the partnership with Wolters Kluwer, a collaboration that started with the center's inception in 2018. The partnership also aligns with Wolters Kluwer's mission of delivering deep impact when it matters most by protecting people's health and prosperity and contributing to a safe and just society. The collaboration extends beyond financial backing, also including essential medical expert solutions, such as access to UpToDate, supporting the Center’s dedicated health professionals in their daily work at the Máxima.
Wolters Kluwer employees walk around the world twice to support the Máxima
Highlighting our partnership, Wolters Kluwer and its employees actively participate in initiatives to support the Center. Last October, for example, more than a thousand employees took part in the Global Well-being Challenge of Wolters Kluwer for the second year in a row. The goal was to collectively walk twice around the earth and raise funds for the Princess Máxima Center. This effort resulted in a remarkable 137 million steps. Additionally, Wolters Kluwer employees contributed their end-of-year gifts to the cause, accumulating €10,000 in total for the Máxima.
These funds fuel crucial projects at the Máxima. One such project is led by pediatrician-in-training Rick Admiraal, focusing on pharmacological research to optimize treatment through precise medication dosing. Another significant initiative is the Outreach project, aimed at improving pediatric oncology care in Malawi, where pediatric cancer care is still far from accessible to a wide range of citizens, showcasing the center's global ambition to eradicate childhood cancer.
