Reimagine trust for today’s healthcare with UpToDate Expert AI

Frontline providers are rapidly adopting generative AI (GenAI) to assist in patient care, marking a fundamental shift in how clinicians consume information in this high-stakes domain. Whether these tools prove safe and effective will depend on successful collaboration between their creators, users, regulators, and governance bodies.

Above all, creators of GenAI tools for clinical use must demonstrate a deep commitment to the rigorous standards and ethical principles of healthcare delivery.

GenAI has the potential to be a powerful tool for supporting sustainability in healthcare organizations right now, as well as preparing them for a more efficient future.

GenAI in decision support: Built on expert-generated content

Wolters Kluwer has announced our new UpToDate® Expert AI tool, an innovative approach to GenAI. It is based exclusively on UpToDate evidence-based content and allows users to interact quickly and naturally in a familiar chat interface. A critical innovation is that the responses showcase the clinical reasoning of our contributors, more than 7,000 of the most experienced clinicians in the world. Responses are also clearly tied to UpToDate information, permitting seamless validation with the platform’s core content.

The new tool is not only faithful to the rigorous UpToDate editorial standards, it also advances our long-standing mission of helping frontline providers make optimal choices for their patients—making it easy to do the right thing.

UpToDate Expert AI is a smarter, faster way to deliver trusted answers—right when clinicians need them. It’s a natural extension of how we deliver care: quick, reliable, and evidence-based.

Going beyond GenAI for efficient, integrated care

And we are going well beyond a GenAI interface to help clinicians care for their patients. We are advancing tools that are deeply embedded within the workflow across teams through EHRs and integrations to help inform better decisions without overloading busy clinicians. We are continuing to integrate UpToDate clinical evidence with technology partnerships and ambient solutions.

Our goal is to delight those on the frontline of patient care while improving care across health systems. All types of clinicians and patients receive the same information, thoughtfully accessible within their workflow, helping to provide consistent, high-quality care. This approach is purpose-built to help healthcare enterprises choose among options fitting for even the most rigorous governance processes.

In UpToDate Expert AI, it’s like I’m having conversations that suggest the next question that I should be thinking of, and I find that really helpful.

UpToDate AI: GenAI clinicians can trust

For over 30 years, clinicians have trusted UpToDate for care information when it matters most. Multiple studies have shown that the simple concept of answering questions near the point of care has a profound impact on decision-making, patient safety, efficiency, and learning.

And we continue that journey with our unwavering commitment to innovation, partnership, and reliability, anchored in evidence, and the expertise of our contributors and feedback from our community of more than 3 million users. We have also appreciated the thoughtful feedback from the many testers who helped us on the journey to deliver this new GenAI service.

There is a transformation in how younger generations want to consume and use content, with a practical need to save as many seconds as possible while in workflow. We're aiming to deliver a simulated conversation experience in clinical decision support, aligning with evolving clinician needs.
Yaw Fellin, SVP and General Manager, Clinical Decision Support and Provider Solutions, Wolters Kluwer Health

We are looking forward to understanding how we can continuously improve to fulfill our mission of advancing the quality and consistency of care by helping frontline providers do their critical work.
