The CRA has announced the extension of temporary measures currently in place to allow digital signatures on the T183 and T183CORP. Revenu Québec has announced that digital signatures will continue to be accepted indefinitely. As a result, accountants can continue to practice social distancing and keep the safety of their clients and staff top of mind.
Gone are the days of non-secure file sharing through email or regular mail. Accountants’ handling of client documents is not only a professional obligation, it’s a legal obligation as well.

CCH iFirm’s partnership with DocuSign now gives accountants additional peace of mind that document exchanges are secure. Clients can also be reassured that their personal information stays personal.

Clients can now sign authorized tax forms (such as T183, T183 CORP, TP-1000, CO-1000, T1135, and T1013), engagement letters, or other type of documents with their existing access to CCH iFirm Portal. This feature is also now fully integrated between CCH iFirm Portal and Taxprep, CCH iFirm Taxprep and CCH iFirm Cantax. You can publish documents or forms that require your customer’s digital signature in a single click. To streamline your signature process, a built-in tag was integrated to the forms to indicate where the digital signature must be affixed.

eSignature Legality in Canada

Electronic Signature has been recognized by law in Canada since 1999, with the passage of the Uniform Electronic Commerce Act. Canada has a history of being an Open, business-friendly, eSignature technology-neutral environment.

We had started looking at digitizing our entire T1 process, instead of just parts of it, before the pandemic, so we were actually way ahead when COVID-19 hit. Our original goal was to get 20% to 30% of our T1’s completely digital, but the pandemic helped us increase that number to something like 80% to 90%. Some of our clients could hardly believe how easy it was, and it seems doubtful that we (or they) would ever go back!

Using digital signatures has been a real time-saver for us, giving us more time to do the value-added work that really helps our clients and enhances our service levels.

As far as the new date and time stamp requirements go, I can’t imagine having to do that manually – the integration will eliminate a very time-consuming and tedious process for us.”
