Description
The perioperative management of newborns with surgical conditions succeeds with an interdisciplinary team effort. Textbooks with a strictly medical or surgical focus rarely cover multidisciplinary collaboration. The Manual of Neonatal Surgical Intensive Care will therefore be useful to both medical and surgical clinicians who are providing care for newborn infants with surgical conditions.
These infants generally spend less than a day in the operating room, but require days, weeks, or even months of complex pre- and postoperative care that spans several medical and surgical areas of expertise.

The Manual of Neonatal Surgical Intensive Care, in its third edition, is a collaborative effort between the surgical staff at Children’s Hospital and the medical staff at Boston Children’s Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and hospitals further afield. Its intended audience is surgeons, neonatologists, pediatricians, neonatal nurse practitioners, neonatal nurses, critical care transport clinicians, and all other healthcare providers trained to render pre- or postoperative services or counseling in the care of newborns.

Children’s Hospital receives infants who require surgery and complex postoperative surgical care from local newborn nurseries, Children’s Hospital associated Special Care Nurseries, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, as well as from referring hospitals across the country and around the world. The contributing authors reflect this web of community and tertiary hospitals.

In this third edition, the editors have added several new chapters and have updated all existing chapters, adding illustrations to clarify the written descriptions. The text provides detailed hands-on guidelines to the nonoperative management of newborns with surgical conditions. There are comprehensive yet succinct chapters on embryology, prenatal diagnosis, and differential diagnosis. Two new chapters added to the third edition are “Extracorporeal Life Support” and “Ambiguous Genitalia.”
