American College of Sports Medicine debuts new 'Translational' Journal

The American College of Sports Medicine is pleased to announce the first issue of the Translational Journal of the American College of Sports Medicine (TJACSM) - a new online publication dedicated to translating research evidence into clinical practice in sports medicine and exercise science. The journal is published by Wolters Kluwer.

The first issue of TJACSM was posted today on the journal website. "This new journal will place ACSM in the forefront for translational and policy science related to exercise," commented TJACSM Editor-in-Chief Joseph E. Donnelly, Ed.D., FACSM. Dr. Donnelly is professor of internal medicine and director of the Energy Balance Laboratory and Center for Physical Activity and Weight Management, Cardiovascular Research Institute at The University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

At a time of increased emphasis on translational medicine, the TJACSM provides a unique focus on translating science to action. It publishes original research, clinical trials, systematic reviews, meta-analyses and policy research addressing the translational implications of basic, clinical and policy science to everyday, real-world practice.

Studies selected for publication are those applying basic and clinical research findings that move discovery and knowledge into clinical practice and community settings. Dr. Donnelly and the editorial board also envision periodic special issues focusing on current topics in translational sports medicine and exercise science.

The first issue of TJACSM, consisting of invited contributions from prominent researchers and clinicians, is online now. We are pleased to present as one of our initial content offerings a paper titled “Crowdsourcing Innovative Physical Activity Programs: Active Schools Acceleration Project Case Study” by researchers at ChildObesity180 at Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition, which proposes a framework for crowdsourcing public health intervention models, using as a case example a national effort to surface, select, disseminate and scale up school-based physical activity programs.

Plans call for new articles to be published every other week.  Initial content will be made freely available to the public for a period of time, then will be provided as an ACSM member benefit and available for individual and institutional subscriptions.

The editors are now accepting submissions of new research and other translational papers relevant to sports medicine, exercise physiology and health behavior change. To learn more about the types of papers sought and to submit to the TJACSM, please visit Wolters Kluwer's Editorial Manager system.

"The TJACSM is designed to close the gap between laboratory and clinical sciences and the application of research findings to the general community," Dr. Donnelly adds. "It will help to meet the need for information on important new practice-relevant research that can contribute to our work with athletes at all levels, as well as our efforts to improve health and fitness in the population."
