The Challenge

This large aluminium manufacturer is committed to creating a safe workplace and places safety excellence as a top priority at every level of the company.
New processes and systems were needed for standardizing activities globally, with key corporate goals to achieve such as guaranteeing safety for employees, while expanding a key manufacturing site in North America.

The Solution

The company came up with its own approach to Behavior-Based Safety (BBS). With BBS, they wanted to evaluate unsafe behaviors from a global business unit perspective and bolster support for their “culture of safety.”
To support implementing the program across its global sites, they looked for an EHS platform that could accomodate large volumes of data, be very user-friendly and accessible in multiple languages to engage site employees.
The company chose Enablon for its flexibility and configuration capability to reflect additional and specific field names in the solution. The Metrics application would support international data collection and specific report formats.

The Results

The company has been able to deliver real results across the organization and these are testament to the project team’s drive in getting data on events and observations reported in a standardized way into Enablon on its 14 global sites. It gave them the opportunity to rethink their processes, engage and train staff and mentor them in executing and following up quality observations.

Crucially, the company has been able to see the value of its safety program underpinning lower incident rates at its sites, with a great improvement in the quality of process. This is evidenced by several success factors and KPIs, including a very high increase in the amount of data captured and analyzed at sites, as well as a global recordable injury/illness rate reduction to <1.10 and a global days away from work rate reduction to <0.40, which are dramatic improvements compared to initial rates. Such successful results are having an impact on the organization at a number of levels, especially through the ability to measure overall corporate safety performance and thus keeping employees engaged on prevention.
