Learn how to build a POCUS curriculum for your residents

POCUS (point of care ultrasound) is an increasingly important practice in Family and Internal Medicine. Essentially, it means using ultrasound technology "at the point of care" where the patient is currently being treated, like in an emergency room or during a procedure. Drs. Dancel and Bornemann will discuss their experiences instituting POCUS curricula at their Internal Medicine and Family Medicine residency programs, including unexpected challenges, lessons learned, strategies for success, and helpful resources to guide you along the way.

Dr. Dancel is a Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics in the Division of Hospital Medicine and the Associate Program Director for the Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Program. She created and has directed the Medicine Procedure Service since its inception in 2014. She also created the point of care ultrasound (POCUS) elective curriculum and co-directs the required intern POCUS longitudinal curriculum for the Department of Medicine. She is on the steering committee for the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) - American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) POCUS certificate of completion program and also serves on the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine POCUS working group. She has directed and has been invited to serve as faculty for POCUS workshops and conferences nationally and internationally. Her focus of clinical research and quality improvement is in the use of POCUS in advancing diagnostic and procedural medicine.

Dr. Bornemann is a board-certified family physician and military veteran with eight years of experience in the U.S. Army, including a combat deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and earning a Combat Medical Badge for providing medical care under direct fire. He is certified by the Alliance for Physician Certification & Advancement (APCA) in musculoskeletal (RMSK) and vascular (RPVI) ultrasound. He was the Founding Chair of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Point-of-Care Ultrasound Member Interest Group in 2015. He has experience introducing point-of-care ultrasound curricula in several family medicine residency programs and teaches ultrasound frequently both nationally and internationally. He has published multiple journal articles on point-of-care ultrasound and edited the textbook, Ultrasound for Primary Care.
