Physicians now access UpToDate clinical decision support within EMR at Dutch Stage-6 Amphia Hospital

The Health division of Wolters Kluwer, a leading global provider of information and point of care solutions for the healthcare industry, announced today the Amphia Hospital in the Netherlands is the first hospital in Europe to fully integrate UpToDate® Anywhere within the Epic electronic medical record (EMR) system. Now, Amphia clinicians have direct, expedited access to trusted, evidence-based clinical information and actionable treatment recommendations at the point of care.

“Since May, we have been using UpToDate Anywhere with mobile access. Now, by having UpToDate embedded within Epic, it has added a new dimension to how we use our EMR,” said Dr. C. van Guldener, medical manager of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, Amphia Hospital. He adds, “With UpToDate clinical decision support, Amphia doctors have instant access to treatment and diagnosis recommendations that are continuously updated and evidence-based.”

In instances where a user cannot access UpToDate via the EMR, UpToDate Anywhere provides clinicians access on-site, at remote offices, at home or on the go by using the UpToDate mobile app for iOS and Android.

“UpToDate is committed to helping clinicians practicing at Amphia make better care decisions when and where they have clinical questions,” said Denise Basow, MD, President & CEO, Clinical Effectiveness, Wolters Kluwer. “Working with major EMR providers to offer UpToDate within the clinical workflow is essential to realizing that commitment.”

Headquartered in Breda, Amphia Hospital (Amphia Ziekenhuis) is a large hospital system with two locations in Breda, and two additional sites in Oosterhout and Etten-Leur—totaling 837 beds. Amphia is staffed by 265 clinicians in 33 specialties, 4,600 employees and 300 volunteers working together to improve the quality and safety of patient care. Amphia provides care for a region of over 400,000 residents.

The hospital is a member of the Samenwerkende Topklinische opleidingsZiekenhuizen (STZ), a Dutch association of 27 tertiary teaching hospitals working together. Amphia Hospital is distinguished by leadership in patient-oriented research, clinical care and education.

UpToDate provides the most current clinical information available on more than 10,500 topics in 22 medical specialties. The UpToDate text search link is prominently located at the top of the clinician’s EMR workspace and ensures clinicians have easy and efficient access within the clinical workflow. UpToDate continues to work with Amphia to explore an additional HL7 Infobutton integration available via Epic. This significantly streamlines the point-of-care decision-making process by using UpToDate search results refined by the patient’s Problem List.

As Amphia builds and renovates its Molengracht hospital in Breda into a modern, 128,000 m 2, “future-proof” facility, it is also focused on the future with its EMR implementation and adoption. It is among only 10 health organizations in the Netherlands to be recognized by HIMSS Europe for having achieved Stage 6 on the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM). According to HIMSS Europe, Stage 6 achievement reflects a commitment to improving safety, minimizing errors, and prioritizing IT implementations.
