When we look at nursing in the age of Covid-19, we often see safety concerns, staffing shortages, and burnout. But the pandemic, as difficult and exhausting as it is, has shone a light on areas that can be addressed and improved upon so that the next health crisis finds us strong, prepared, and resilient.

For nurse executives, the way forward is contingent on seven strategic imperatives.

Nurses want to be challenged, engaged, and effective. They want continuous learning opportunities to practice at the top of their licensure and scopes of practice and thereby have a meaningful impact on patients’ well-being.
