I am honored to be the senior editor for the eleventh edition of ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription. I’d like to take a moment to tell you about some of the more significant changes we have made in this new edition of our flagship title.

As with every new edition, the editors and contributors for the 11th edition integrated the most up-to-date recommendations available from ACSM position stands and other relevant professional organizations’ scientific statements, thereby making Guidelines the most current, primary resource for exercise testing and prescription. Several chapters include specific updates based on the recommendations in the 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, and almost all health conditions covered within the different chapters now include information about high intensity interval training, or HIIT. An exciting new chapter was added on conditions that affect the brain, chapter 11, and chapters 2 and 3 from the previous edition were merged into one chapter titled Preexercise Evaluation, chapter 5 includes updates on recent evidence on flexibility, balance, and power, chapters 8 and 9 include information on metabolic and cardiovascular disease, and we also made significant changes to the appendices.

As a whole we strove to streamline the information included in the condition chapters and sort where those recommendations were covered in the text. I am extremely proud of the work that our team has put into this new edition and believe the updates will be exceedingly useful to students, instructors, and practitioners in every stage of their career. We hope you find them as useful as we do.
