Barrier based risk management in maritime
Safety has been the subject of discussion in the maritime industry for a long time. Already in 1836 a parliamentary commission was established in the United Kingdom to assess the cause of many shipwrecks.
After some experience in the use of the Guidelines, in 1993 the International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted the International Management Code for the Safe Operation of Ships and for Pollution Prevention (the ISM Code). In 1998, the ISM Code became mandatory. The Code establishes safety-management objectives and requires a safety management system (SMS) to be established by all organizations.
Throughout the maritime industry about 50 customers are using Wolters Kluwer Enablon’s software tools to manage risk. These customers are found in various sectors, e.g:
