Men in Nursing: New Journal by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins First to Address Issues Facing Men in A Female-Dominated Profession
Experts Identify Men as Untapped Resource for Addressing Nursing Shortage Predicted to Increase to 29% by 2020
(March 9, 2006 ) Men in Nursing has launched as the first professional journal dedicated to addressing the issues and topics facing the growing number of men who work in the nursing field. Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, part of Wolters Kluwer Health, and publisher of some of the nation's most popular nursing journals, including American Journal of Nursing (AJN) and Nursing2006 saw the market need for a resource that spoke directly to the minority in the traditionally female profession.
Although the percentage of men in nursing has doubled over the past twenty-five years, men currently comprise only six percent of nurses, yet make up nearly fifty percent of the U.S. population. Many have identified men as an untapped resource that could scale back the nursing shortage predicted to grow to 29% by 2020. Labor experts feel nursing is the top occupation for job growth for the next decade.
"More men are discovering the countless career opportunities available in this dynamic and rewarding profession," said Bob Kepshire, RN, MS, CEN, editor-in-chief, director of Emergency and Community Services at the University Health Care System in Augusta, Georgia. "Our goal is to encourage men to choose nursing and help them manage the issues, stereotypes and gender-barriers they face."
Men in Nursing addresses clinical, technology, career, and personal areas as well as strategies to successfully collaborate with a healthcare team. Articles, which are peer reviewed and support evidence-based practice, focus on advocacy for continued research and education at local and national levels. The journal also includes articles written to help inform and educate nurses who teach, recruit, and manage men in the field. Continuing education credits are available in each issue and on the journal's website www.meninnursingjournal.com.
