The need for compounded products is increasing with personalized medicine. Ensuring the quality of a compounded preparation through verification includes: process, procedures and personnel. With continuous litigation and regulatory involvement it is necessary to have a quality assurance and quality control systems in place. This can help mitigate liability and ensure the overall safety of the patient by delivering accurate compounded preparations.
Kupiec will review the differences between quality control, quality assurance and continuous quality improvement; identify continuous quality improvement techniques that hospital pharmacists can use in their compounding processes; assess the reasonable and appropriate quality control testing frequency based on specific compounding process; and give examples of continuous quality improvement techniques for hospital pharmacies.

About the Presenter
Dr. Thomas Kupiec is CEO of Analytical Research Laboratories (ARL) in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He currently serves on the National Advisory Board for the College of Pharmacy at OUHSC as well as a graduate faculty member. Dr Kupiec has taught general chemistry, forensic toxicology, neurotoxicology and pharmacogenomics, and he remains prominent in the field of research. Dr. Kupiec is affiliated with numerous pharmaceutical and forensic organizations.
His responsibilities as CEO at ARL include technical expertise, project oversight, business development, and organizational management. Dr. Kupiec offers consultation services for a variety of pharmacy related fields including USP chapters 795 and 797. He has published numerous articles and abstracts in a variety of journals including; The Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, International Journal of Pharmaceutical Compounding, The Journal of Analytical Toxicology, and The Journal of Forensic Sciences.
