First in the list “Best Workplaces”, among companies over 1,000 employees
Madrid (April 21, 2009) – Wolters Kluwer Spain was named the best place to work for a second year from a list of major Spanish companies. This result was based on a survey done with 178,000 employees of 250 Spanish organizations. Wolters Kluwer Spain, which has 1,000 employees, received the best evaluation among all large organizations participating in the survey. This result recognizes Wolters Kluwer Spain’s efforts over the past years to reach operational excellence regarding talent retention and human capital development.
Membership pride is key to being Number One
The workplace is the second living space of employees, after their family home. To make the workplace as nice as possible, the balance between personal & working life has been key to Wolters Kluwer’s achieving a great evaluation by its employees. Félix Alarcón, Human Resources Director of Wolters Kluwer Spain, said that “a satisfied employee is an efficient worker.”
With the aim of creating a work environment that is as comfortable as possible, the company encourages employees to take the lead in proposing improvements. Such proposals are set in motion by workteams made up of employees, and the development of these initiatives is a source of pride for the company’s members.
Less time to manage, more time to take care of employees
To boost and manage the employees’ proposals, the Human Resources department of Wolters Kluwer Spain has developed a radical and innovative transformation. The aim was to get rid of administrative tasks, and concentrate time and energy in activities focused on the improvement of the work space and the personal life of employees. In this sense, Félix Alarcón adds: “We had it easier than other companies, because we are the first provider of human resources software in Spain, so we have just applied our technology to our own workflow.”
Tasks such as management of sick leave, returns, holidays requests, etc. are now mainly self-handled directly by each employee through their Employee-Portal and the integrated payrolls and human resources software, commercialized by the company.
Creating shared excitement through work teams
Wolters Kluwer has implemented some initiatives focused on promoting an excellent bi-directional relationship between directives and their workteams: the best evaluated initiatives were those ones combining business successes with playful activities, such as: karts championships, snorkling, balloon flights, snacks, and poetry contests among departments’ teams.
A successful company means job security
To make employees feel that the company’s success is the best guarantee of their employment, Wolters Kluwer Spain surveys its employees to look for ideas and proposals related to their own positions. For example: to reduce unnecessary expenses (travel substituted by teleconferences), to promote tele-work (5% of the staff has chosen this modality in last year) or to vote on the convenience of moving the office to a different location.
Building company culture though sustainability projects
Group sustainability actions are the ones that generate the biggest response, and make the differentiate working at Wolters Kluwer Spain from other companies. Some examples of company sustainability projects over the last year are:
- Employees and their families planting more than 25,000 trees in areas close to the offices,
- Recycling of paper, CDs, batteries, domestic oil, cellular phones,
- Training and implementation of policies for decreasing energy consumption,
- Periodic blood drives
